Slick Hilly's old job:
Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- New York Governor David Paterson has selected Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, the New York Times reported.
The governor plans to announce his decision in Albany this afternoon, the newspaper said. An aide to Gillibrand confirmed that she had accepted the appointment, the Times added.
- Gillibrand is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition. She opposes gun control. She supports extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for middle class families; stem cell research; and the Children's Health and Medicare Protection Act. Gillibrand opposes attempts to partially privatize Social Security. She strongly supported passage of the 2008 Farm Bill. Gillibrand broke with former Governor Eliot Spitzer on the issue of illegal immigration, opposing his plan to issue New York State drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. She supports same-sex marriage.
- “I come from a hunting family,” said Gillibrand, after noting that her mother shoots the Thanksgiving turkey almost every year. Last fall, Gillibrand said, her mother “got a turkey” and “got a deer.” According to Gillibrand, her mother “was on her rifle team in college” and is “the best shot in our family.”
- “We appreciate hunting rights in our family,” Gillibrand said, declaring herself “very pro Second Amendment.”
- “In upstate New York, we have a very rich culture in hunting, and I think hunting rights are very important,” Gillibrand said.
